In the morning around 100 operations were said to be underway after heavy storms and strong gusting winds uprooted trees, lifted roofs and caused disruptions on local rail networks.
This is on top of the 200 or so interventions made in immediate response to the extreme weather events on Saturday.
There are also fears of further damage and disruptions since more extreme weather is forecast for Sunday.
Milan’s councillor responsible for Mobility and Public Works, Marco Granelli, explained on his social pages that the expected heavy rains present a risk of flooding for the Seveso and Lambro rivers.
While water levels in the Lambro and Seveso rivers are currently said to be within normal limits, that could quickly change.
“Preventive actions have therefore been activated for flooding and flood risk, with repeated clearing of all the underpasses and the Seveso floor in the Niguarda and adjacent districts, and in the Lambro Park,” he said.
“Maximum vigilance is recommended.
“It is suggested that residents not stand under trees or scaffolding of construction sites, dehors and tents,” he added.
The most affected area is the southwest of Milan in Rozzano, Pieve Emanuele and Corsico.
Gardens and cemeteries in a range of municipalities have been temporarily closed.
