This year’s event carries special significance, marking the 30th anniversary of the association’s religious and community activities.

At the most recent committee meeting, held on February 2, the nine members responsible for organising the event carefully and collaboratively reviewed every item on a long to-do list.

Nothing is being left to chance, in keeping with a celebration that has, over the years, become a reference point not only for Abruzzesi but for Melbourne’s broader Italian community.

As always, the picturesque setting will be the park surrounding the Holy Cross Centre at 207 Serpells Road, Templestowe.

The religious program will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the recitation of the Holy Rosary, followed by Mass celebrated by Father Chris Monaghan at 10:30 a.m.

The service will conclude the triduum of prayers and evening Masses leading up to the feast day.

The sung parts of the liturgy will be led by the Casa d’Abruzzo Club Choir, directed by maestro Giuliano Di Ienno.

During Communion, the atmosphere will become even more evocative with the entrance of the Bellini Band, conducted by Jason Vella, performing Schubert’s Ave Maria.

Following Mass, at 11:30 a.m., there will be the blessing of the sick, followed by the traditional procession with the relic of Saint Gabriel, accompanied by the Bellini Band along the park’s pathways.

To the left of the altar, under the covered chapel, the statue of the saint will be placed, while on the right will stand the new bronze bust containing the relic of the humerus, facing the faithful.

In his homily, Father Monaghan will reflect on the short but intense life of Saint Gabriel, born Francesco Possenti in Assisi in 1838 and died at just 24 in 1863 at Isola del Gran Sasso.

Canonised in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV, he remains deeply loved for his simplicity, fervour and closeness to young people.

Alongside the religious celebrations, the day will also offer moments of festivity and socialising.

Members and volunteers will welcome groups of worshippers arriving from across Melbourne, along with stalls offering traditional food, drinks and musical entertainment.

As there is every year, there is strong anticipation for the vintage car display, which last year featured Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and the ever-popular Fiat Topolino.

Traditional Abruzzese folk groups in colourful costume will also be present, as will the Alpini from the Epping chapter, led by Giovanni Traglia.

It promises to be a day of faith, tradition and belonging, open to the entire Catholic community of Melbourne who are warmly invited to attend.
