Farm labourers near Naples were allegedly lashed with belts after taking a timeout and left without hospital treatment after serious illness, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere said Thursday.

The revelations came after a probe into the illegal hiring of foreign farm hands in the Caserta area.
The probe has led to the issuance of four residence bans in the province of Caserta for agricultural entrepreneurs from Marano di Napoli, accused of the crimes of labour exploitation and employment of illegal labour.
They allegedly forced the mainly North African hands to work for 11 hours a day at a pittance.
