Possession was roughly level with Fiorentina creating 13 shots on goal to Genk’s three.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 45th minute when Joris Kayembe took a wonderful first touch in the box before chipping Fiorentina keeper Oliver Christensen.

Four minutes later, in added time, Lucas Martinez equalised for Fiorentina from close range after Genk goalkeeper Hendrik Van Crombrugge parried a goal-bound header by Yerry Mina straight into his path.

Nicolas Gonzalez scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 82nd minute when he calmly converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Michael Kayode.

Fiorentina’s last game is away to Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros, the current second-placed team in their group.

Should Fiorentina get a result in that game, they’ll progress directly to the Conference League quarterfinals.

If the Hungarians win, however, they’ll overtake Fiorentina on the table, meaning the Italian club will first need to play in the round of 16 against a third-placed Europa League group stage competitor.
