The away side dominated possession with 69 per cent of the ball, and went ahead in under five minutes.
Left-back Cristiano Biraghi took the ball past two players before sending it into the top-left corner with his right foot after a fine cutback.
Giacomo Bonaventura made it 2-0 within minutes after he slotted in the rebounded shot of teammate Nicolas Gonzalez that came back off the post.
It was Gonalez’s turn to score in the 40th minute when he headed in a brilliant corner whipped in by Biraghi.
Rolando Mandragora made it 4-0 11 minutes after half time when he headed home an excellent reverse ball that was delicately chipped by Bonaventura.
Davide Biraschi got one back for Genoa two minutes after Mandragora’s goal by bringing down Morten Frendrup’s header into the box with a nice first touch, cutting it back past the defender and hitting it low to the left of the keeper.
It wasn’t the start that Genoa would have wanted, but for Fiorentina it’s a statement of intent that the rest of the competition would be paying attention to.
