First electronic bracelet fitted under new anti-GBV rules

A 30-year-old Italian living near Monza on Wednesday became the first man to be fitted with an urgent anti-stalking electronic bracelet under new rules against gender-based violence (GBV).

The punitive novelty comes amid a spate of femicides highlighted by the murder of 22-year-old university student Giulia Cecchettin.

According to the rules, contained in a GBV bill moving through parliament, bracelets can be fitted to subjects who have committed ‘red flag’ offences, including mere threats.

Padua University biomedical engineering student Cecchettin, killed by her 21-year-old course mate and ex-boyfriend on November 11, has become the latest symbol of the anti-femicide battle.
