The evening was further enlivened by the engaging entertainment of the popular Pauly J and the announcement of two new honorary members.
Before the cake (as always expertly prepared by the talented team at Pasticceria Padova in Fawkner) was brought out, Floridia Social Club President Carmelo Matarazzo took the microphone.
In his opening address, he welcomed those present and acknowledged the evening’s special guests. Words of gratitude were extended to the tireless committee members, each of whom also received a small token of appreciation.
“I would like to mention our guests of honour,” he said. “Fernando Cardinale (president of the Casa D’Abruzzo Club) accompanied by his wife Connie; the club’s patron, Mrs Franca Lastrina; Miss Di Natale, our honorary member; and former president, secretary and treasurer who worked tirelessly for our club, Mr Sebastiano Gargante, here with his wife Nuccia.
“I also thank Cavaliere Carmelo Scala, Pietro Renda, Lucia Scala and Connie Matarazzo, our treasurer.
“But without a doubt, the most special guests tonight are all of you.”
The announcement of two new honorary members followed: Antonino Renda and Antonietta Giudice.
In an emotional moment, the two accepted the important recognition and received certificates from the committee to warm applause and joyful cheers from their young grandchildren.
The emotion was also evident on the face and in the words of the elegant Matarazzo. “We have all worked hard for this evening,” she said.
“I am very proud to see so many people here today and of the support you continue to give us over time.
“The two new honorary members, by pure coincidence, are my compari. Giudice is my child’s godmother, while Renda’s wife was my confirmation sponsor.
“They are both special people who have supported the club so much over the years and have been very generous.”
Mr and Mrs Matarazzo also highlighted the generous donation made by Dame Lastrina to the club at the start of the evening.
Between nostalgic memories and celebratory moments, the atmosphere of joy and conviviality did not fade until the very last light in the hall was switched off.
