Gasparino La Rosa, a finance guard major from Calabria, set off from the eastern Sicilian port on July 8 and reached his destination on August 12.
On his fundraising site, he wrote “I am ready to face this challenge putting my heart, legs and sweat into it, but I need your help to ensure that research becomes more and more effective and manages to save many more lives.
“I will leave Sicily to reach the Arctic Circle (North Cape) by bicycle, where I will leave a scarf from my dear Maria.”
Getting off his bike, as pledged, La Rosa wrapped the scarf around the globe installation marking the point, and proudly explained that his wife Maria “faced her long and draining battle with her head held high, never throwing in the towel and always trying to get to the next round, and I wanted honour that fighting spirit”.
La Rosa’s epic ride was inspired by his brave wife who “faced her long and exhausting fight head-on, without ever throwing in the towel”.
La Rosa’s ‘ride for life’ has so far raised a magnificent €21,400 of his target of €30,000 for Italian cancer research group AIRC.
