The truck was travelling down the Casoria area of Naples when the ground below it opened up.
Much of the truck was left buried under dirt and rubble as a result of the collapse.
The driver was rescued by firefighters and taken to a local hospital.
His condition was not immediately known.
The road was cordoned off and seven residential buildings were evacuated, while water and power services were disrupted.
According to bystanders, gas could be smelled in the area at the time of the incident.
Italian fire brigade officials said the collapse of the road resulted in a broken gas pipeline.
According to local reports, the sinkhole measured about 26 feet wide and was about 40 feet deep.
It is unclear what caused the sinkhole.
