Her assertion came following a debate on her communications to parliament ahead of the European Summit in Brussels.

“During the years of the centre-left government the GDP collapsed, now with us it is doing better,” said Meloni.

“Propaganda clashes with reality,” she added, before moving on to the European Stability and Growth Pact under discussion in the Belgian capital.

“Negotiations are very tight, and the starting positions are far apart,” said Meloni.

“But some glimmer of hope can be seen.”

On the possibility of using a veto on the new budget rules that should replace the old Stability Pact from next year, the PM said she did not “exclude any of the options”.

“I think we have to make an assessment of what is best for Italy in the knowledge that if an agreement is not reached, we go back to the previous parameters,” Meloni told the Senate.

“I will do everything I can,” she added.
