Possession was even as both sides only had one shot on target for the entire match, with Genoa creating 14 opportunities to Empoli’s six.
Ruslan Malinovskyi put Genoa ahead eight minutes before half time with a half volley from 30 yards out.
The equaliser came in the 67th minute when Matteo Cancellieri got on the end of Viktor Kovalenko’s cross to head in from the edge of the six-yard box.
Genoa are 14th on the table, four points above Empoli in 17th.
