Marco Bucci on Saturday inaugurated a site for the demolition of the pillars and parts of the bridge that remained standing following the incident.

The mayor said demolition should be complete by the end of March.

The bridge will then be rebuilt.

The contract to rebuild the bridge was awarded on Tuesday to a consortium of three Italian construction companies, Salini Impregilo, shipbuilder Fincantieri and Italferr.

Authorities have chosen a design by Italy’s most famous living architect, Renzo Piano.

Piano, who was born in Genoa and has a studio there today, donated the design for free.

The project will cost €202 million.
