Appearing on film at the presentation in Paris against the backdrop of the Colosseum, Crowe said “Rome is not only the capital of Italy, it is one of the capitals of the world.”

“Expo 2030, at my signal unleash humanity,” he roared, reworking one of his most famous lines from the epic film.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri were on hand at the presentation of Rome’s bid at the BIE.

Choosing Rome is choosing a better future, Meloni said.

“The legacy of Expo in Italy is to build a path of progress for the international community; to show that our goals for the millennium can be achieved, that it is not just a matter of words, and that relations between peoples and their environment can really be improved by working together,” Meloni said.

“Choosing Rome for World Expo 2030 means choosing all this.”

She said the whole of Italy is behind the bid and that “various institutional levels” were present to support Rome’s candidacy.

The year 2030 is a “very special, strategic year – it would be a good signal to have the Expo return to Rome in that year”.
