The Avengers started the better of the two teams by dictating the early stages of the game and controlling possession.
In the 20th minute, a well-delivered Heidelberg corner was flicked on at the front post before landing at the feet of an unmarked attacker who headed the ball in from close range.
The following 15 minutes saw both teams arm wrestle for possession and create good chances at both ends of the ground while showcasing a high level of intensity and competitiveness.
In the 36th minute, Heidelberg broke through the Avengers midfield, starting a quick attack down the left side of the pitch. The Heidelberg attacker drove toward goal and miscued a cross which fortuitously landed at the feet of a teammate who struck the ball past Avengers Goalkeeper Manos from close range.
Eight minutes later, Heidelberg played a nicely weighted pass in behind the Avengers defence before the Heidelberg winger finished off the resulting one-on-one against the advancing Manos.
The second half saw Heidelberg set up with most of their players behind the ball, making the Avengers’ task extremely difficult.
Both teams kept up the high intensity, providing an entertaining contest for the crowd.
Deep into stoppage time, Avondale captain Yitay Towns produced a well-executed cross that was deflected into his own goal by a Heidelberg defender, giving the Avengers a consolation goal as the match finished 3-1.
The result draws Heidelberg United three points closer to Avondale, who remain on top of the NPL VIC standings.
The Avengers now look forward to Tuesday night where they will play against VPL 2 side Altona City in the fifth round of the Docherty Cup followed by their NPL Round 12 clash against South Melbourne on Saturday afternoon at Avenger Park.
