The event, entitled Gerarchia e privilegio (hierarchy and privilege), will be a staged reading with live music drawn from the writings of Primo Levi.
The event will be held with the support and collaboration of the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney and the participation of the Dante Alighieri Society of Brisbane
The evening will feature actress Diana Höbel and musician Federico Nicoletta, an artistic duo long engaged in theatre projects centred on historical memory and ethical reflection.
The production is built entirely on Levi’s words, alongside those of historian Hermann Langbein, drawing from essays, newspaper articles and reviews written by Levi over time.
From this wide-ranging material emerges a complex vision of the concentration camps— places of horror, created from principles not only belonging to the past.
Fear, hierarchy and privilege become central categories within a system that overturns the moral imperative, reducing human beings to a means rather than an end.
It’s a striking and still deeply relevant reflection, one that speaks directly to the dynamics of contemporary society.
Original music by Claudio Rastelli will accompany the reading with both restraint and emotional force, heightening its impact.
The performance will be presented in Italian with English subtitles and will run for approximately one hour, making it accessible to a broad and multicultural audience.
The event will take place on Friday, January 30 at 5 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church. Entry is free, with bookings required.
It’s set to be a moment of listening, remembrance and awareness, where theatre and music come together to recall, understand and ensure we do not forget.
