Critics were met with responses from those who accept the nomination as homage to the large Italian community of Victoria.

Italians in Melbourne are naturally proud that the role has been entrusted to one of their countrymen, and they’re grateful that Mr Gobbi decided to take on the role despite negative comments from certain members of the wider community.

Mr Gobbi is in Melbourne to perform in the opera Falstaff at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

The opera’s premiere experienced resounding success and there was no shortage of praise from critics for Mr Gobbi’s performance.

How many Italians would be able to applaud him in Her Majesty’s Theatre?

Not many, we assume.

But we’re sure there would be many who would love to hear just one aria sung by the famous baritone, judging by the letters and phone calls we have received.

The Italian community hopes Mr Gobbi will participate in the Concerto Operistico, conducted by Maestro Marcianò, which will take place at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, on Tuesday, March 4, as part of the Moomba celebrations.

Mr Gobbi’s participation in the concert would be the biggest gift he could give his countrymen in Melbourne, particularly those with a passion for opera.

It would also be a good chance for our King of Moomba to get to know members of his “kingdom”, who will cheer him on in the main parade on Monday, March 10.
