“Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia constitute an unbearable social scourge that is still present and is the cause of unacceptable discrimination and violence,” said Mattarella.
He mentioned that in some parts of the world, this discrimination and violence is “even legitimised by norms that trample on the rights of the individual,” before calling for “unanimous condemnation” of all manifestations of intolerance.
“It is the task of institutions to develop effective prevention strategies that educate in the respect of diversity and the other, in inclusion,” said Mattarella.
“Abuse, violence, intolerance, trample on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and our Constitution.”
Mattarella said the Charter recognises that all citizens have equal social dignity and are equal before the law, without distinction of sex, race, language, religion, political opinion, personal and social conditions.
