The Chamber of Deputies approved by 299 votes to nil the resolution that commits the government to “stop funds reaching Hamas - via institutional channels, international or private organisations - that might be used to fund terrorist attacks and incite hatred towards Israel”.

The text also asks the government to work to “develop diplomatic action with the main partners and regional actors to avert an escalation of the conflict”.

Recently, a number of other EU states had also decided to halt aid for Palestine but had subsequently reneged after an outcry from other member states.

Reuters reported that Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg and Ireland publicly voiced alarm while other countries did so behind the scenes, according to diplomatic sources.

“Our understanding is that there is no legal basis for a unilateral decision of this kind by an individual Commissioner and we do not support a suspension of aid,” a spokesperson for Ireland’s foreign ministry said.
