The restoration project, which will include interiors as well as the facade of the iconic building, is set to start in the coming days, the First Procurator of St Mark’s, Carlo Alberto Tesserin, said.

The restoration work will mainly involve the stone cladding of the north wing of the narthex – the atrium of the basilica – and the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

Other important restoration work will take place on the mosaic decorations of the floor of the altar of the blessed Sacrament, which have steadily deteriorated and were damaged by recent high tides in 2019.

Seven restoration firms were shortlisted out of 27 that put in bids for the tender, Tesserin said.

The final choice was Rti Lares Lavori di Restauro of Venice, which said it will take two years and four months to complete its project.

The €3.3 million is in the form of a loan obtained from the Ministry of Culture as part of the 2021-2023 Strategic Plan Great Cultural Heritage Projects”, then assigned to the Archaeological Superintendence of Venice.
