Commonly referred to as a ‘roofie’ in Australia, date-rape drugs include gamma-hydroxybutyric (GHB) and gamma-butyrolactone (GBL).
Police collected over 90 litres of GBL and five litres of GHB throughout 2021.
The report also showed that 32 new psychoactive substances had been found in Italy – a new range of synthetic drugs that have caused thousands of overdose deaths in the United States.
In 2021, police seized a record 20 tonnes of cocaine, which was 47 per cent more than the previous year.
This record has already been surpassed in 2022, as 21 tonnes of cocaine have been seized in the last six months.
The report concluded that an alarming trend has emerged in Italy, with overall seizures of illegal drugs significantly more common.
