Toaff, the deputy commander of the Givati Brigade, had his Italian citizenship confirmed by the Italian embassy in Israel.
He was the great-grandson of the late Elio Toaff, the chief rabbi of Rome for half a century who died in 2015 at 99.
Together with Toaff, three Staff Sergeants were also killed in Tel al-Sultan in the southern Gaza Strip after a hidden explosive device detonated, according to the IDF.
The others killed were Agam Naim, 20, Amit Bakri, 21 and Dotan Shimon, 21.
Agam Naim, a paramedic serving in a combat role, is the first female soldier to be killed in Gaza since the start of the war, the IDF said.
