The incident occurred in the Hungarian capital in February last year.

Monza-born Salis, 39, whose trial was immediately adjourned until May 24, appeared in court in handcuffs and with her feet shackled by leather stocks with locks on.

She smiled shyly at the public benches as she was brought in, an ANSA reporter saw.

Salis’ father said his daughter was being treated like an animal.

“We have not been joking for 11 months but are telling the facts,” he continued.

“The point is that both politicians and the government and also many newspapers pretend not to see and keep talking about whether she is guilty or not, leaving in the background the fact that there is a shameful violation of civil rights.”
