Italy has applied to build the telescope in Sardinia, in the area of Sos Enattos, at Lula, the Ministry for Universities and Research announced Wednesday.

It said the government has sent a letter to Antonio Zoccoli, president of the National Nuclear Physics Institute (INFN), the coordinating body for Italy’s candidacy for the project.

The letter confirmed its commitment, both institutional and economic, to ensure that the proposal is the winning one at the European level.

The Einstein Telescope (ET) or Einstein Observatory, is a proposed third-generation ground-based gravitational wave detector, currently under study by some institutions in the European Union.

It will be able to test Einstein’s general theory of relativity in strong field conditions and realise precision gravitational wave astronomy.
