The first of the series is ‘Life in the Time of Crisis – An Italian Perspective’, a run of contemporary Italian movies which take the viewer on a journey through Italy during a time of economic crisis.
The selection of films, which kicked off with Carlo Verdone’s A Flat for Three (Posti in piedi in paradiso) on April 9 and will continue with Giuliano Montaldo’s The Entrepeneur (L’industriale) on May 28, offer a spectrum of everyday life which shows that, no matter how dire the situation is, life goes on.
Giuliano Montaldo’s multi-award winning taut drama tells the story of factory owner Nicola Ranieri, played by Pierfrancesco Favino, who is struggling both professionally and emotionally.
On the brink of bankruptcy, Nicola is simultaneously suspicious that his architect wife Laura is having an affair.
After following her, he discovers a regular rendezvous with Gabriel, a Romanian musician and car park attendant.
Although Laura is only secretly attempting to help her husband financially, she instead finds herself at the centre of Nicola’s intense jealousy.
Set in Turin, the movie shows a city paralysed by the financial crisis, and the emotional impact this has on individuals.
Hosted at Palace Cinema Norton Street on a Tuesday of every month, the screenings will be preceded by a film introduction and guests will receive an antipasto and prosecco on arrival.
The screenings will also feature a Q&A with a special guest and moderated by Antonella Beconi, convenor for Italian at the Centre of Continuing Education, University of Sydney, on behalf of the IIC.
You can see the full program at the IIC’s website.
