"Your election as president is a show of faith in the future and a signal of belonging to the ideal of continental integration," Mattarella wrote.
"A particularly important signal because it comes just weeks after the summit of heads of State and government in Rome to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the treaties that founded the European Union."
Italian Premier Paolo Gentiloni also hailed the new French President and applauded his victory via Twitter, adding that the outcome restored "hope" within Europe.
Twitter proved to be a popular mode of communication, as Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano also took to the social media platform to express his satisfaction with the election results.
"France and those who believe in Europe, in free trade, in solidarity, are celebrating,” he wrote.
"We wait for [Macron] at the G7 summit in Taormina [later this month]."
Newly re-elected Democratic Party (PD) leader Matteo Renzi congratulated Macron for his triumph, describing the election outcome as “extraordinary”, while the two new leaders exchanged expressions of friendship and best wishes for their respective jobs.
