The dedicated volunteers who founded the group in April 1981 aimed to promote real solidarity among women, helping them overcome loneliness and social isolation.
It was an admirable initiative that thrived for over forty years, until changing personal circumstances and careful reflection led to the decision to open the club to male members as well.
Today, the club is led by a highly active and motivated committee that works to provide the best opportunities for social connection for all members, while honouring the original mission.
President Emma Acquaro, supported by the Committee, approached this year’s gathering with her usual care and attention, welcoming attendees and reminding them that the club is now in its 44th year of activity, making it one of the earliest Italian seniors’ clubs established in Victoria—though this was the 36th AGM since receiving formal government recognition.
Acquaro then introduced Francesco Pascalis, who was invited to chair the meeting. After the reading and approval of the social and financial reports, it was time for the committee elections.
Pascalis read the list of candidates submitted for members’ consideration, which was unanimously approved by the assembly. The committee is as follows:
— Emma Acquaro, president
— Rosa Tarquinio, vice president
— Giuseppina Presutti, secretary
— Clemente Di Lucia, treasurer
— Franca Cirilli, Caterina Pasinetti, Irma Mastrangelo, Leda Mattia, Anna Angerosa and Lina De Lucia, committee members
Acquaro warmly thanked all members for their support and trust, and expressed her sincere appreciation to Pascalis for his collaboration and assistance.
The day ended with a pleasant morning tea, closing on a note of harmony and satisfaction—a fitting conclusion for a club that holds an important and respected place within the Italian community.
