Police found eight years’ worth of undelivered mail at the residence of the 56-year-old postman, who is Neapolitan but lives near the northeastern city of Vicenza.

The discovery equated to 573 kilograms of mail including old telephone directories from 2013 and campaign leaflets from the 2010 regional elections, as well as stacks of bills, tax forms, bank statements and other correspondence.

Investigators said it is the biggest stash of undelivered mail ever discovered in Italy.

Police tracked down the mail after finding a smaller stash in a garage which the man had previously used.

According to Rai News, the rediscovered mail will now be sorted and finally delivered to its rightful recipients.

The "violation, misappropriation or destruction" of someone else’s post is a criminal offence in Italy, and perpetrators could face up to one year in prison.
