The film tells the story of Tommaso (Marco Giallini), a successful, respected surgeon who is also conceited and proud – and a staunch atheist.

When Tommaso’s only son Andrea announces his desire to join the priesthood, Tommaso refuses to accept his newfound Catholicism.

He becomes further horrified when his wife and daughter undergo a spiritual transformation themselves.

A string of hilarious situations ensue as Tommaso goes undercover to bring down the charismatic priest Don Pietro (Alessandro Gassman) who he believes “brain-washed” his son and caused upheaval in the family.

God Willing won Best New Director in the David di Donatello Awards of 2015, and Best New Director in the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists 2015.

All proceeds from the screening will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, in tribute to Dino Cesta, co-founder of the Newcastle Italian Film Festival, who died in 2010 from the disease.

The Italian film tradition is continued in Newcastle by other festival founder, Nick Moretti.

Newcastle has an Italian population of approximately 4,143 people, out of 133,187 total residents.

The festival brings the Italian community together and the new Saturday Night Italian Cinema event is sure to be a similar success.
