The statement reads: “We condemn this decision and demand its immediate revocation in the strongest terms,” referring to the plans for the so-called E1 area near Jerusalem.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also warned that Israel risks jeopardising the two-state solution with its announcement of new settlements across the West Bank.

“Italy condemns the Israeli decision to authorise new settlements in the West Bank,” Meloni said Thursday.

“This decision is contrary to international law and risks definitively compromising the two-state solution and, more generally, the political prospects for achieving a just and lasting peace.”

Meloni further expressed concern about Israel’s intentions in Gaza.

“Italy is following with deep concern recent developments related to the decisions taken by the Israeli government regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and firmly reaffirms its commitment to peace, security and respect for international law,” she said.

“In particular,” she added, “the decision to proceed with the occupation of Gaza, in response to the inhumane terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, constitutes a further military escalation that can only worsen the already dramatic humanitarian situation.”

The coordinated international response reflects growing concern that Israel’s recent decisions risk deepening the conflict and undermining the prospects for peace.
