“I have signed a new decree banning people from entering Italy who have been in India within the past 14 days,” Speranza wrote on Twitter.
Speranza added that Italian residents can return from India but must take a coronavirus test before their departure and upon their arrival, and remain in quarantine.
Meanwhile, anyone already in Italy who had been in India in the past 14 days should contact health authorities and be tested for the virus.
India, which is facing a health crisis, is battling a “double mutant” strain of COVID-19.
On Sunday, the country posted the world’s highest single-day increase in cases for a fourth day, reporting 349,691 new cases in 24 hours.
Other countries to impose a ban on travel from India include Germany, the Maldives and Bangladesh.
