“It is the umpteenth violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions, a serious threat to regional stability, as well as to international peace and security,” Mr Alfano said.
“The resumption of missile tests by the Popular Democratic Republic of Korea and the continuous development of the relevant technologies and military nuclear ones represent an open challenge to the international regime of non-proliferation.”
Italian Premier Paolo Gentiloni also criticised North Korea’s latest missile test.
“Italy is committed to increasing international pressure on an irresponsible regime,” the premier wrote on Twitter.
Experts confirmed that the powerful missile has the potential to travel up to 13,000 kilometres, reaching the entire US mainland, though it was uncertain how much that reach would be reduced if the missile was carrying a nuclear warhead.
