According to data from the health ministry, 1739 new cases were confirmed in the 24-hour period ending Monday evening.
The previous time the nation saw such a low daily number occurred on March 10, when 77 new cases were registered.
Italy now has 199,414 known cases.
It also registered 333 deaths since Sunday evening, raising to 26,977 the number of known deaths in the country – the highest in Europe.
The number of coronavirus patients currently in intensive care fell by 53 on Monday to 1956, according to official figures from the civil protection agency, marking the first time in more than a month that the number has been under 2000.
Of 105,813 people currently ill, 20,353 are receiving non-intensive hospital care and 83,504 are in self-isolation at home.
The number of people in hospital fell by more than 1000 in total in the past 24 hours.
The regions of Basilicata and Molise reported no new cases on Monday, while Umbria and Sardinia confirmed just two and three more respectively.
Fourteen of Italy’s 20 regions reported fewer than 100 new cases, with Lombardy (+590), Piedmont (+278) and Emilia-Romagna (+212) remaining the worst hit.
Italy is preparing to relax the strict lockdown measures that are credited with slowing down its epidemic, with reopening set to begin in phases from May 4.
The government has warned that any freedoms restored could be taken away again if the number of new infections shows an increase.
