Several municipalities have issued the red alert for water risk, with rivers above the danger level.

Near Ravenna and Bologna, the Sillaro broke its banks flooding fields and crops between Imola and Massa Lombarda.

Civil protection has also intervened in the Ravenna area and in Imola, where several roads have been closed because they are no longer safe to use.

Houses had to be evacuated at San Lazzaro, near Bologna.

"What is taking place in the Bologna area is a significant event, with rain that has been falling continuously for 24 hours,” Emilia-Romagna Region authorities explained in a statement.

“Moreover, a persistence of rainfall is expected on the central-eastern sector of the region, which could create further increases in the hydrometric levels from upstream on the basins already affected by the floods.”

In Messina in Sicily, flooding hit both the Tyrrhenian and Ionian parts of the city, as rivers and streams broke their banks.

Gales hit Genoa and a tree hit a parked car.

There was a blackout on Capri.

Rivers rose to dangerously high levels near Milan, too.
