The national statistics agency said Italy had just 10.33 million people aged between 18 and 34 in 2023, a drop of 22.9 per cent compared to the 13.39 million it had 2002.
The young population is down by almost five million (-32.3 per cent) with respect to the peak it reached in 1994, Istat added in its annual report.
There has been an increase over the last 30 years, on the other hand, in the number of people aged 65 or older, which has risen from just over nine million in 1994 to over 14 million in 2023 (+54.4 per cent).
