The report said Italian cities’ metro, tram and suburban railway infrastructure is not up to the levels of the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain.
Environmental association Legambiente’s Commuters-Special Urban Areas report said this lack of ‘track’ infrastructure means that Italian cities are increasingly in the grip of traffic and smog.
Italy, for example, has just under 256 kilometres of metro lines, a long way from the 680.4 km that the United Kingdom has, or Germany’s 656.5 km and Spain’s 615.6 km.
In fact, Italy’s overall total is comparable to those of cities such as Madrid (291.3 km) and Paris (225.2 km), the report said.
Italy has 397.4 km of tram lines, compared to 875 km in France and 2,042.9 in Germany.
This may be why Italians rely more on their cars.
The report said Italy has 666 cars for every 1000 inhabitants, 30 per cent more than the average for France, Germany and Spain.
