Published on Wednesday, the Eurobarometer poll revealed Italy is the most Eurosceptic country in the EU, followed by the UK with 53 per cent of people surveyed supporting the bloc.

On average, 68 per cent of Europeans believe they benefit from EU membership.

The survey was answered by more than 27,000 people aged 16 and over across all 28 EU member states.

The participants were interviewed face-to-face by Kantar Public between September 8 and 26, 2018.

The results come amid rising tensions between Italy’s anti-establishment government and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker over the nation’s controversial budget proposal.

The Italian government is targeting a budget deficit of 2.4 per cent in 2019, much higher than the 1.8 per cent promised by the previous government.

“We are going to Brussels with a budget we are proud of and which we want to discuss without prejudice,” Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Tuesday.

Juncker said on Tuesday that there would be a “violent reaction” from other eurozone countries if Brussels were to accept Rome’s proposals.

“Italians understand things well, and they know they can’t keep spending more than what they have in the state’s coffer. It’s common sense,” he added.
