The strike will affect flights as well as public transport, including buses, trains, ferries and motorways, in and around the cities of Milan, Turin, Florence, Rome, Naples, Palermo and Catania.

It has been called by trade unions protesting over low wages and poor working conditions.

Rome is expected to be the affected the most, as general strike action is also planned by public and private sector employees, including by waste management company AMA, on Friday.

AMA has urged residents in the capital not to throw out their rubbish on Friday during the strike, but to instead wait until Saturday, when collection services will resume.

Anyone travelling with an Italian transport company in the affected areas on Friday should contact their train operator, Italian airline Alitalia, or local public transport authority to confirm their service will be running.

It is unclear how toll motorways will be affected by the strike.

During previous strikes, traffic has been filtered through self-service toll booths, causing traffic jams and delays during busy times.

The exact timing of the transport strikes will vary, and some services on Thursday night may also be affected.

Planned strike action:

  • Airlines: from 00:01 to 24:00 on October 25.
  • Trains: from 9:00 pm on October 24 to 9:00 pm on October 25.
  • Ferries: 24-hour strike throughout October 25.
  • Motorways: from 22:00 on October 24 to 22:00 on October 25.
