The nation recorded 578 deaths from the virus on Wednesday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 21,645.

The rise is slightly lower than the 602 deaths announced on Tuesday.

Italy’s infections rose by 2667 – the lowest daily jump since March 13 – to 165,155.

Deaths in Italy have stubbornly hovered between 525 and 636 for the last 11 days despite a brief drop on Easter Sunday that was reversed the day after.

Yet while deaths remain high, the pressure on Italian hospitals continues to ease.

The number of people in intensive care fell by another 74 to 3186, while patients in non-intensive care dropped by 12 to 28,011.

The world is watching closely to see if Italy’s weeks-long nationwide lockdown eventually squashes the virus.
