The proportion of Italians who (admit they) smoke has dropped from 30 per cent in 2008 to 24 per cent in 2023.
It’s a positive sign, but it means one in four Italians are still hooked on tobacco.
Some 59 per cent of adults between the ages of 18 and 69 don’t smoke and 17 per cent have quit, said the report.
Smoking is more prevalent among the young, with 30.2 per cent of 18–25-year-olds using either traditional cigarettes, heated tobacco or e-cigarettes, the ISS said.
