The ministry recorded 630 new deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 50,453.

The previous daily death toll was 562.

There were 22,930 new cases on Monday, to total more than 1.4 million.

For the first time since the start of the country’s second wave of infections, the number of active cases fell by 9098, from 805,947 on Sunday to 796,849 on Monday.

Italy joins the United States, Brazil, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom in passing the symbolic 50,000-death mark, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins.

Neighbouring France has reported nearly 49,000 deaths as of Monday.
