“Congratulations to Milan-Cortina,” International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, Thomas Bach, said in a statement.
“We can look forward to outstanding and sustainable Olympic Winter Games in a traditional winter sports country.
“The passion and knowledge of Italian fans, together with experienced venue operators, will create the perfect atmosphere for the best athletes in the world.
“The Olympic Winter Games Milan-Cortina 2026 will feature iconic venues and beautiful settings, combining the attractions of a modern European metropolis with a classic Alpine environment.”
IOC members voted 47-34 for the Milan-Cortina bid over Stockholm-Are from Sweden that also included a bobsled track in Latvia.
Milan-Cortina’s jubilant delegation broke into chants of ‘‘Italia! Italia!’’ when the result was announced.
This will be the second Olympic Winter Games Italy has staged in 20 years.
“I’m really emotional,’’ Italian Olympic president Giovanni Malago said.
“It’s a very important result, not only for me but the whole country.’’
The IOC will give at least US$925 million toward Italy’s games operating costs of up to US$1.7 billion.
