Vito Dell’Aquila won the country’s first gold medal, defeating Tunisia’s Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi to win the men’s taekwondo -58kg category on Saturday.

Meanwhile, fencer Luigi Samele won the country’s first silver – and first medal overall – on Saturday.

He was defeated by Hungarian Aron Szilagyi, who became the first man to capture a hat-trick of Olympic gold medals in the same fencing event when he triumphed in the individual sabre final.

Italy has also won three bronze medals so far, from Elisa Longo Borghini in cycling road, Odette Giuffirida in judo and Mirko Zanni in weightlifting.

In swimming, 16-year-old Italian standout Benedetta Pilato was disqualified in the 100 breast for foot movements not on the same plane.

In men’s basketball, Italy beat Germany 92-82 in the opening game for both teams on Sunday.

The Azzurri will take on Australia on Wednesday.
