According to the latest data released by Italy’s civil protection agency, there have now been 201,505 cases of the virus in total.

The country registered 382 new deaths between Monday and Tuesday bringing the death toll to 27,359.

There are currently 105,205 people known to be infected with the virus in Italy.

Figures showed that another 2317 people had recovered on Tuesday, making a total of 68,941.

The department said there are currently 1863 coronavirus patients in intensive care, 93 fewer than on Monday, as the downward trend continued.

The number of patients currently hospitalised with symptoms also fell, in total 19,723 (630 fewer than yesterday), as well as the number of people in intensive care (1863, a fall of 93).

The vast majority of new cases were recorded in Lombardy, which remains by far the worst-hit region in Italy.

The sparsely-populated Basilicata region reported zero new cases.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the government was taking a “calculated risk” in allowing 4.5 million people return to work as of next Monday, and could not afford bolder action like reopening schools.

A relaxation of stay-at-home rules is also on the agenda for May 4, as people will be allowed to do more outdoor exercise and visit relatives and partners.
