The space was inaugurated on Friday at a location owned by Venice’s chapter of the National Animal Protection Organisation (ENPA), with the support of the local municipality, the Foundation Forte Marghera and ENEL.

The ‘SOS room’ is designed to temporarily host and assist cats while their owners are unable to care for them, due to illness or other difficulties.

It will also be used to raise awareness and educate citizens on animal rights, said Italy’s oldest and largest animal welfare non-profit.

Along with hosting cats in need of tender and loving care, the centre will also promote good adoption practices, recommending selecting a pet from the local pound or animal shelter.

It will also be educating children on how to care for and respect animals, and provide useful information to families regarding legislation against abandoning pets and the services available to support animal owners in the area.
