The average income of Italians in 2021 stood at €22,540, for an overall total indicated in the 2022 declarations of €912.4 billion, €47 billion more than the previous year (+5.5 per cent).
The highest average income was from self-employment, equal to €60,520, while for entrepreneurs (owners of sole proprietorships) it was €24,130.
Employees declared an average of €21,500, while pensioners were at €18,900.
Lombardy led the territorial ranking with a mean of €26,600, whilst at the bottom was Calabria (€16,300).
Meanwhile, one in four taxpayers in Italy declares less than €15,000 a year, the inland revenue service's financial department said on Thursday.
It said 26 per cent of total taxpayers declared up to €15,000 and paid a proportion of all personal income tax (IRPEF) of 3.6 per cent.
While just 4 per cent of taxpayers declared more than €70,000, they paid 31 per cent of the total.
The remaining 70 per cent of taxpayers lie between €15,000 and €70,000 per annum and declare 65 per cent of the total IRPEF declared.
