The race at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour saw the British pairing of John Gimson and Anna Burnet finish second to take silver, while Paul Kolhoff Alica Stuhlemmer brought home the bronze for Germany.
Tita and Banti’s win was Italy’s fourth Olympic gold medal in sailing and the country’s first since Alessandra Sensini won gold in the mistral women in 2000.
Tita is also the first athlete from the autonomous province of Trento to win gold in the history of the Summer Games.
The news comes two days after Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs and Gianmarco Tamberi won gold medals in sprint and high jump events.
Jacobs made Olympic history by becoming the first Italian to win the men’s 100m final, succeeding Usain Bolt as the new fastest man in the world.
No Italian man had ever reached the Olympic 100m final let alone win the event in the history of the Games.
On Monday, Vanessa Ferrara won a silver medal for Italy in the floor excercise gymnastics event.
With the victory of the sailing champions, Italy has won 29 medals, surpassing the 28 medals it won in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2012 London games with six days to spare.
Italy currently has a total of five golds, nine silvers and 15 bronzes.
