It is the third Italian championship crown in the history of the Naples side, and their first since 1990, when late soccer great Diego Maradona played for them.
Naples erupted with joy and fireworks were set off in the city as soon as the final whistle was blown, with motorists and scooter riders honking their horns and fans hugging and singing in the streets.
“It’s a historic day, thank you Napoli,” one fan, who was in tears, said.
Although the game was away from home, Napoli’s Stadio Diego Maradona was full with around 50,000 supporters who watched the match on big screens.
There were also thousands of Napoli’s fans at Udinese’s ground, where there were scenes of chaos when some fans invaded the pitch to celebrate the title triumph, although order was quickly restored.
Following the match, Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti, pictured above, told Dazn television that “the greatest emotion for me is seeing the Neapolitan fans happy”.
“These people have the right to experience this moment,” he added.
“Now I feel a little more relaxed. We did it.”
Napoli Chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis, pictured above, said while he was thrilled with this season, he was hungry for more success.
“When I took over the club I said it would take us 10 years to qualify for Europe, and we achieved that ahead of target,” De Laurentiis said at Stadio Diego Maradona.
“Then I said it would take us 10 years to win the league, and we did it ahead of target.
“Now we have to win it again and win it again and then we still haven’t won the Champions League yet.”
Things did not initially go to script in Udinese, with Sandi Lovric firing the hosts in front on 13 minutes.
But Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen, Serie A’s top scorer, earned Napoli the point they needed when he blasted home the rebound of a parried shot on 52 minutes for his 22nd goal of the season.
