The home side started brightly with David Strelec firing a warning shot just wide.

Next it was Ascoli’s turn to narrowly miss, this time with a long-range effort from Pedro Mendes.

In the second half, Gianluca Di Chiara’s freekick had Leali worried, but it too was just off target.

Chance after chance came for both sides who were desperate for the win, but neither could finish.

Just as it was looking as though both teams would finish on 48 points and miss out on the playoffs, Filippo Inzaghi’s men stole the game in the 94th minute thanks to an excellent finish from Luigi Canotto.

Receiving the ball from Andrey Galabinov, Canotto took the ball wide to make space for his shot that went low and hard into the far post.

The celebrations from both those on the pitch and those in the Reggina dugout were wild.

Reggina finish in seventh while Ascoli finish 12th in heartbreaking fashion.
