The cold weather may have slowed Avondale’s start to the game, as they only managed three shots in tight and goalless first half.

The half time speech from the coaching staff clearly pumped the boys up, as Avondale upped the ante and would go on to have 13 shots. But still, they couldn’t break the deadlock.

That was until, dramatically in the 97th minute, The Avengers finally hit the lead when Mells cut inside his man on the edge of the box and shot into a defender, before blasting the rebound into the top-left corner.

The lone goal gave Avondale a 1-0 win and moved them to outright second on the table.

The Men play at home this Saturday against St Albans.

Meanwhile, the Avondale FC Women’s team looked to continue their hot form when they played North Geelong on Sunday.

The Avengers got away to a hot start with three goals in the first half, and a fourth in the second half to complete a 4-0 win.

The scorers were Sikic, Hubeek, Sawa and Davies. The win puts Avondale FC clear in first place. The Women play this Sunday away to Brunswick Zebras.
