The altercation involved D’Aversa moving his head into Henry’s as the player made the most out of the slight contact.

“Following the events that occurred at the end of the Lecce-Verona match, US Lecce announces that coach Roberto D’Aversa has been relieved of his duties,” said the club in a statement on its website.

“The coach and his staff are to be thanked for their work,” it added.

On Sunday, D’Aversa apologised on social media for the “sad and unpleasant episode that saw me as a negative protagonist at the end of the Lecce-Verona match”.

“I came into head-to-head contact with Henry, but I did not headbutt him, nor did he headbutt me,” said D’Aversa, adding that there were no excuses or extenuating circumstances for his behaviour.

D’Aversa’s tenure on the Lecce bench lasted 28 days of play, with the side now at 15th place in the league table at 25 points, one point behind 13th-placed Verona.

On Monday afternoon the team was set to resume training for its next match against Salernitana on Saturday.

It remains to be seen who will lead the session.

One name reportedly being touted is former Cagliari and Spezia coach Leonardo Semplici.
